New York From Every Angle

The American novelist, poet, art critic, and twice Pulitzer Prize winner John Updike once said, “The true New Yorker secretly believes that people living anywhere else have to be, in some sense, kidding.” New York, for New Yorkers, is the centre of the world, the axis around which everyone else spins. Once you’ve been, It’s hard to argue otherwise. We’ve curated a 4-night trip for our readers that seeks out the very things that put the ‘Big’ in the Apple.

Once you’ve been, It’s hard to argue otherwise. We’ve curated a 4-night trip for our readers that seeks out the very things that put the ‘Big’ in the Apple.

Where You’ll Stay

Welcome to New York City! Upon arrival in the city, you will be met at baggage claim and helped with luggage and brought to your waiting luxury transportation which will then whisk you to your hotel, the fabulous Crosby Street Hotel. Tucked away on a quiet cobbled street in the heart of Soho, the whimsically decorated Crosby Street Hotel is mere steps away from a plethora of New York City’s best shops, restaurants, and cafes. Designer Kit Kemp has created a playful Anglo-American aesthetic, replete with eclectic art works by local New York artists. The hotel is also one of the most environmentally responsible in the whole of the US.

What You’ll Do

Day 1: Art Exploration

The day is your own but we would recommend an art-filled exploration of the city because New York is home to some of the greatest galleries and museums in the world. Start off with a morning stroll north of Soho to Chelsea where you’ll find some of the world’s top independent galleries such as the Gagosian, David Zwirner, Hauser & Wirth, and Pace sitting cheek by jowl. Next, head west to the Meatpacking District to peruse the Whitney Museum of American Art before a quick pit stop in the shape of a lobster roll in the Chelsea market. Head back to the Crosby for some R&R before getting ready for dinner at Wallsé in the West Village, where you’ll be served some of the most beautiful plates of contemporary Austrian fare by the innovative chef Kurt Gutenbrunner.

Day 2: Brooklyn by Bike

Explore the hidden gems of Brooklyn by bike with your insider guide who will show you the many different faces of this vibrant neighbourhood. To get inspired, read former Tour De France rider David Millar’s guide to cycling Brooklyn at night here. The flat terrain makes navigating Brooklyn by bike suitable for most levels. Your route will be customized to your interests and will include riding along the waterfront for incredible views of the Manhattan skyline, riding through tree-lined streets and stopping along the way for delicious treats. Enjoy the views and pedal along as your guide creates an epicurean adventure that exposes the diversity of this borough. When you’re done, head over to the Brooklyn Museum, the city’s new artistic epicentre.

Day 3: Comedy Central

After a relaxing morning, it’s time to immerse yourself in the world of New York City comedy on a private walking tour. Get yourself over to Greenwich Village, where you will meet your comedy insider/tour guide. See the sites in Greenwich Village where modern-day stand-up comedy was born and learn the history of these locations, as well as the history of comedy in New York City. Your comedy insider will even introduce you to one of New York City’s rising stars of comedy!

Tonight, head over to the historic Comedy Cellar to watch New York City’s top comedians perform. Often referred to as the “Harvard of comedy clubs,” this renowned institution has been generating laughs since 1982. While you’re in Greenwich Village and in search of a post-show tipple, you simply have to visit Air’s Champagne Parlour, recommended to us by Sandia Chang here.

Day 4: Midtown Experience

Make your way to Midtown for a view of New York’s most iconic skyscapes starting at SUMMIT One Vanderbilt, located next to Grand Central Station. Your personal ambassador will be waiting for you at SUMMIT One Vanderbilt’s welcome desk, providing you with front-of-the-line access and insider information to one of New York City’s most iconic landmarks. Your ticket also includes a complimentary welcome drink and commemorative photos of your experience. Your journey begins at AIR, an art installation by Kenzo Digital that will warp your perception of space and light and will invite you to interact and physically connect to New York City’s skyline. You will then continue to LEVITATION, where you will enjoy a rush stepping out over the city on two glass ledges suspended over 1,100 feet above Madison Avenue and will be rewarded with heart-racing views of New York City from above. Your experience will then lead you to REFLECT, where you will escape the boundaries of perception in a shape-shifting visual immersion by artist Yayoi Kusama. After your experience, you are invited to take in the skyline at SUMMIT’s cafe APRES or on their outdoor wrap-around terrace (weather permitting).

We recommend a leisurely lunch at Le Pavillon, Chef Daniel Boulud’s Michelin-starred culinary oasis located on the ground floor of the One Vanderbilt building.

The rest of the day is yours to explore Midtown and its surroundings at leisure, including the Empire State Building, Grand Central Station, Rockefeller Center, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, and more.

Day 5: Departure

After a morning at leisure, your chauffeur will meet you at your hotel to accompany you to the airport for your flight home. Safe travels!
