Anthony Franklin’s best-kept alpine secrets

Few people know the slopes of the Alps better than Anthony Franklin, a UIAGM-certified (Union Internationale des Associations de Guides de Montagnes – International Federation of Mountain Guides Associations) mountain guide since 1998. He specialises in skiing, mountaineering, ice climbing and rock climbing across Europe and overseas, and is always our first port of call when we want the inside track, whether on- or off-piste.

As a lifelong ski guide and mountain enthusiast, I’ve had the privilege of exploring the most extraordinary alpine destinations. These places aren’t just ski spots – they’re stories waiting to be told. Let me take you on a journey through my favourite corners of the Alps, from the rustic charm of Italy’s Aosta Valley to the timeless elegance of Switzerland’s Klosters, Mürren and Arolla.

Gressoney, Aosta Valley, Italy: Hotel Jolanda Sport

Hotel Jolanda Sport

In Gressoney, nestled below the magnificent Monte Rosa – Europe’s second-highest peak –you’ll find the Hotel Jolanda Sport. This family-run hotel has been welcoming guests for generations, and it’s one of my favourite retreats. Arriving via a rickety chairlift adds to the adventure, and once there, you’re greeted with amazing food and the sight of cool Italians in vintage mountain attire. It’s the perfect blend of tradition and breathtaking alpine beauty.

Valgrisenche, Aosta Valley, Italy: Chalet Refuge Giasson

Chalet Refuge Giasson

Valgrisenche feels like stepping into another world. The Chalet Refuge Giasson, tucked deep in a remote valley, is only accessible by snowmobile or helicopter. It’s the ideal base for heliskiing adventures reminiscent of Canada – tree runs, high-alpine terrain and that exhilarating sense of wilderness. Alexio and Chiara, the incredible hosts, make sure you’re well-fed and comfortable, while their wine cellar rivals anything I’ve seen. If you’re craving solitude and adventure, this is the place.

Alagna, Aosta Valley, Italy: Ristorante Unione

Ristorante Unione

In the ancient village of Alagna, where buildings date back to the 1500s, you’ll find the charming Ristorante Unione. Before the war, this was a gathering place for communist unionists, and its walls still echo with pre-war charm. The bar exudes old-school character, while the food is simply fantastic. Alagna itself is a vision of alpine allure, with ancient stone-roofed houses, lively wine bars and a bubble lift whisking skiers up to 3,000 metres into the Monte Rosa domain.

Klosters, Switzerland: Hotel Chesa Grischuna

Hotel Chesa

Klosters is one of the Alps’ most iconic ski destinations, and the Hotel Chesa Grischuna holds a special place in its history. Known as “Hollywood on the Rocks”, it was a favourite of stars like Greta Garbo and Bing Crosby in the 1940s and ’50s. Walking through its doors feels like stepping into a time capsule. The bar is always buzzing, and Aris, the bartender, makes the best whiskey sour I’ve ever had. It’s old-world luxury at its finest, and just a short stroll from the lifts.

Mürren, Switzerland: Hotel Eiger

Hotel Eiger

Perched on an 800-metre cliff, Hotel Eiger is nothing short of spectacular. The view of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau peaks creates a dramatic backdrop that takes my breath away every time. Suzanne, the hostess, is a delight, and the only way to reach this magical spot is by cable car and train. Once you’re there, you’ll find excellent food, fine wine and the charming old train that rumbles through the village. It’s an experience like no other.

Arolla, Switzerland: Hotel Kurhaus

Hotel Kurhaus

Arolla feels like a portal to the golden age of alpinism. The Hotel Kurhaus, nestled in a forest and originally built as a refuge for Victorian climbers, combines history with unparalleled access to the pistes. This ski-in, ski-out gem features a pub, restaurant, games room, ping pong table and two pool tables. Philip, the hospitable host, ensures every detail is taken care of, even driving guests to the nearby helipad just five minutes away. Surrounded by the Couronne Impériale – a circle of 4,000-metre peaks including the Matterhorn – Arolla is a paradise for ski touring and heliskiing. Its small lift system and picturesque villages add to its unique charm.
