One of the original lifestyle stores, Grandpa has been serving stylish Scandinavians since 2003. Its small shop in Stockholm’s Södermalm district was an early adopter of a template now followed by brands around the world. Rather than just stock its own range of clothing, Grandpa curates a selection of pieces from big-name brands alongside small independents, as well as goods for the home. It’s a recipe that’s found everywhere today, from London’s Chiltern Street to Mulberry in New York City, pulling style-conscious consumers in whether they’re after a new Cuban collar shirt, a ceramic mug or a beautifully finished coffee table book.

Grandpa is big on simple, minimal design. As such, it houses a range of collections from classic Scandinavian brands like Nudie Jeans and Forét as well as its own range of staple pieces. Grandpa’s in-house designers focus on essentials like sweatshirts, tees and quilted jackets, and update them with retro-style logos and soft, muted colour palettes. Its store, meanwhile, is a lovely place to be. Its huge single-pane windows provide plenty of light, while integrated rails display the ever-revolving selection of clothes. It’s the kind of place you could walk into with your eyes shut, pick an outfit and know you’re going to look good. It’s how shopping should be. The internet is handy and all, but stores like Grandpa show how the art of in-person discovery is more relevant than ever.
