Rosie Matheson: my favourite place for breakfast in LA

Twenty-seven-year-old Rosie Matheson is a British photographer based mostly in Los Angeles, but sometimes in London. Her work has appeared in publications from The Guardian and Financial Times to Dazed and i-D and she has shot commercially for, among others, Apple, Nike and Sony Music. Rosie specialises in portraiture and documenting youth culture, particularly the music scene, preferring to shoot in natural light and giving minimal direction to her subjects. Typical of her work is her ongoing project Boys, which captures young men and their relationships with masculinity today, often revealing a juxtaposition between confident outward appearances and a deeper sensitivity. A self-confessed introvert, Rosie says she connects with others through image-making.

My secret tip is Millie’s Cafe in Silver Lake, which in my opinion is the best place for breakfast in the whole of Los Angeles. I’m vegetarian and I think it has the best vegan BLT that exists, though it also has tons of meat options. There’s something for everyone. It’s been my go-to spot for years. Many people I know in LA don’t seem to be aware of it. I’ve been taking them, and they’re always shocked that they don’t know about it. That said, it’s busy, so get there early. It has a charming, basic interior and a stretch along the street where you can sit in the sun or shade, immersing yourself in everything that’s going on outside. Silver Lake reminds me of Shoreditch. It’s a trendy area that’s enjoyable to explore on foot and you can walk from the café to all the shops.
