Kirsten Landwehr: a 24-hour art adventure in Berlin

Discover Berlin through the lens of curator, ceramicist and hotelier Kirsten Landwehr who co-founded the stunning Château Royal Berlin with her husband, Stephan Landwehr

My perfect 24 hours in Berlin would start with an early morning visit to the TV Tower, a soaring symbol of the city. As a child growing up in East Germany, standing at its summit felt like tasting freedom, a weightless escape from the world below. Even now, decades later, I feel that same sense of awe as I gaze across Berlin’s sprawling skyline, a blend of history and reinvention. After that, I would follow up with a walk to soak in the city’s energy, visiting old favourites and discovering new ones.

As lunchtime rolls around, I’m spoiled for choice. If I’m craving comfort, I head to Pinci on Große Hamburger Straße 42, a charming Italian day bar where time slips away over plates of food inspired by Grandma’s recipes. The cosy vibe and familiar flavours remind me of family gatherings.

For something heartier, Hasir in my old Kreuzberg neighbourhood never fails. Its Turkish grill sizzles with mouth-watering dishes that have kept me coming back for years. If I’m in the mood for something different in Mitte, Jolly’s unpretentious Chinese fare hits the spot, especially the whole duck – tender and perfectly cooked. Rumour has it, former Chancellor Angela Merkel is a fan too, so keep an eye out for her.

The Anton Janizewski Gallery
Molitor Gallery

With my appetite satisfied, I dive into Berlin’s lesser-known art scene. The Anton Janizewski Gallery is a must for its fearless programming, showcasing artists who tackle urgent societal issues with bold strokes. Molitor Gallery never fails to surprise, blending generations of artists to spark fresh perspectives that linger in my mind. Then there’s Heidi Gallery, where boundary-pushing works tackle the present moment with unapologetic intensity. Each visit feels like a conversation with the city’s soul.

Hyner
Vaust Galerie

Shopping in Berlin is an adventure in itself, and I know just where to go. Vaust Galerie is my first stop for collectible design and functional art – pieces that marry creativity with purpose. At Hyner Berlin, I’m captivated by the curated ceramics, especially Tomasz Niedziółka’s stunning creations, each one a testament to meticulous craftsmanship. For fashion, William Fan’s designs steal my heart with their thoughtful execution and vibrant energy. And I can’t resist Sabrina Dehoff’s playful yet elegant jewellery and fashion collections, which always feel like a delightful surprise.

Château Royal

As evening falls, I make my way to Château Royal’s rooftop terrace, my favourite spot to cap the day. With a cocktail in hand, I watch Berlin light up below, the city stretching out in a breathtaking panorama from the Fernsehturm to the Reichstag and across Potsdamer Platz. The drinks are as inventive as the view, each sip a celebration of the city’s spirit. If I’m not ready to call it a night, I head to Victoria Bar on Potsdamer Straße, a timeless classic where getting a seat is a small victory, but the expertly crafted cocktails make it worth the effort.

Victoria Bar

Before I leave Château Royal, I slip into Room 101, my favourite space today. Each room here tells its own story, but this one, with a striking piece by emerging Turkish-Swiss artist Ceylan Öztrük, feels just right for the moment. It’s the perfect reflection of Berlin itself – bold, layered and always evolving.
