Denise Wingate: shopping and eating in Loz Feliz

Denise Wingate knows how to put together a wardrobe. She’s been in costume design for 30 years, curating the clothes for huge television shows such as Melrose Place, and creating the look of successful Hollywood films including Cruel Intentions and Wedding Crashers. In January she’ll find out whether or not she’s won an Emmy for her work on Daisy Jones & the Six, the 1970s-set Amazon show that had her scouring the vintage shops of her local neighbourhood, Los Feliz in Los Angeles. We talked to her about where to go for the best finds and the places to eat and drink in Southern California’s most attractive and creative under-the-radar district.

I’ve been in Los Feliz for about 25 years. I’m right underneath the Griffith Observatory and I love it here. It’s a little pocket of really artistic people and there are a lot of incredible vintage stores. There are two main streets: Vermont Avenue and Hillhurst Avenue, and the neighbourhood has the feel of a little village with a lot of mom-and-pop places. For incredible vintage clothes, you should start at Squaresville on Vermont, which has an eclectic collection of vintage and contemporary resale items. It was there that I found a 1930s Japanese fringe kimono robe for Riley Keough that was just perfect and really inexpensive. You’ll see some designer names there – it’s a really cool place. Also on Vermont is Replay, which has a nice selection of clothes from the 1970s through to the 1990s. It has a lot of cool boots, which I used in Daisy Jones & the Six.

For lunch, I’d head to All Time for one of its salmon bowls. After that, I would check out whatever was happening at Wacko at La Luz de Jesus Gallery, which is a very cool place that has a great selection of books and incredibly eclectic items. The gallery showcases a wonderful group of low-brow, underground, outsider artists.

Vintage on Hollywood, 4659 Hollywood Blvd, Los Angeles

After that, I’d get back on the hunt for more vintage clothes. Over on Hollywood Boulevard, there’s another great store called Starday Vintage, which has pieces from the 1920s through to the 1980s. Next to Starday is a shop called Vintage on Hollywood, which is by appointment only and its owner, Brian, only stocks super-curated high-end vintage pieces from the 1960s and 1970s. It’s more expensive here, but I found an amazing 1970s cream North Beach Leather whipstitch suit for Suki Waterhouse, which is totally phenomenal.

Los Feliz Flea, 3939 Tracy St, Los Angeles

You also might want to check out Cherry Pick Vintage, a really small store where I found some great necklaces and accessories. If you’re in the area during the weekend, you have to go to the Los Feliz Flea at the local Marshall High School. It takes place on Saturdays and there must be 100 different booths with people selling vintage clothes and accessories. There are really amazing bargains to be had.

Little Dom’s, 2128 Hillhurst Ave, Los Angeles

After all that shopping, I like to head for a happy-hour drink at Figaro Bistrot, which is a classic Parisian-style café. Everyone sits on the sidewalk with a glass of wine and it’s a perfect spot for people-watching. Then for dinner, I like to go to Little Dom’s, which is a local institution. It’s a cosy and hip Italian spot that has pizzas, pastas and grilled meats. To finish off the night I’d go to The Dresden Room, which is a beautiful old-school bar that featured in the movie Swingers. A couple named Marty & Elayne were the lounge act there for over 35 years and were an institution. Now there are various jazz performers in the lounge, where you can sit and have a martini. That would be a good end to a perfect day in Los Feliz.
