Spa of the Month: The Langley, Buckinghamshire

Blending the wow-factor of a stately home with state-of-the-art wellness, The Langley Spa is the destination for total mind and body restoration

The Langley has centuries of “form” on the mini-break front – the original building was a hunting lodge, much favoured by Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn (in their early loved-up days) and after that his daughter, Elizabeth I. Rebuilt as an opulent 18th-century Palladian mansion for the third Duke of Marlborough, it stands in the rolling Buckinghamshire countryside, just near Pinewood Studios, amid 150 acres of Capability Brown-designed parkland.

It was restored to grandeur in 2019 after a six-year, multi-million-pound renovation. Aside from its 41 rooms and suites, it also houses the Langley Spa – one of the largest hotel spas in Europe.

Designed by Dennis Irvine Studio, the 1,600-square-metre space comes with a stunning 16-metre marble-lined swimming pool, softly illuminated to enhance its soothing atmosphere. And yet, despite its scale, the whole experience feels deeply personal and intimate.

Each element has been curated for maximum benefit – and the journey begins in the mixed thermal area – a sequence of heat and water therapies, including an amethyst crystal steam room, designed to reset the nervous system and enhance the circulation. Infused with the grounding scent of juniper wood, the Himalayan salt sauna warms the body from within, while the salt-infused steam room mimics the restorative properties of the ocean air. Meanwhile, for those seeking contrast therapy, the ice fountain offers an invigorating boost, stimulating circulation and accelerating muscle recovery. For those seeking the ultimate in privacy, be they couples or solo travellers, the VIP Spa Suite offers exclusive access to its own thermal facilities, including an amethyst crystal steam room and juniper sauna.

Elsewhere, the vitality pool with its precision-placed jets releases deep-seated tensions – it did wonders for my writer’s neck – while the hammam utilises centuries-old cleansing rituals to purify the body and mind using the sublime La Sultane De Saba product range. A dedicated female-only thermal area provides an additional layer of privacy, with a rose steam room and a gently heated saunarium offering a softer yet equally effective detoxifying experience.

The Langley’s state-of-the-art gym is equally impressive: curated in collaboration with super-trainer Matt Roberts. It’s been kitted out with the latest Technogym equipment and offers not only PT sessions but also Prama, an interactive workout system that “looks like a cross between an arcade game and a playground”, designed to enhance speed, agility and power. Meanwhile the Styku 3D Body Scanner – “the world’s number one rated 3D body scanner with readings that are 76 per cent more accurate than using a tape measure” – provides a deeply personalised approach to health tracking.

The Langley is the UK’s only full-service Sisley spa, too, offering tailored treatments designed by Sisley Paris, renowned for their botanical-based therapies. Through its deeply nourishing phyto-aromatic facials, plant extracts and essential oils restore the skin’s natural balance, tension-melting massages. For men, Gentlemen’s Tonic provides sophisticated grooming and facials designed for modern skincare needs, while Margaret Dabbs’ treatments (including long-lasting, and anti-ageing manicures, pedicure and leg therapies) aim to transform tired feet, and focus on the philosophy that hands, feet, and legs are vital to overall wellbeing. It’s the perfect oasis.
