Rental of the month: Villa Aliki, Corfu, Greece

On a rocky, north-eastern corner of Corfu lies a sophisticated villa with a perfect sea view

The beautiful island of Corfu has, over the years, made quite the impact on its visitors and residents. None more so than British naturalist and writer Gerald Durrell, who inspired many to visit the island after writing his effervescent novels The Corfu Trilogy in which he describes the tranquillity of Corfu with lyrical finesse: ‘That August, when we arrived, the island lay breathless and sun-drugged in a smouldering, peacock-blue sea under a sky that had been faded to a pale powder-blue by the fierce rays of the sun.’

The second-largest Ionian Island has often been a source of inspiration to those who frequent its azure waters, which makes sense the moment you take a cursory glance over its breathtaking topography.

And, of course, accommodation is key – which is where SJ Villas comes in. Imagine arriving on the island, being driven into town via a pre-arranged hassle-free transfer before hopping on a boat to one of the most gorgeous villas that can be found. The property is called Villa Aliki and lies on a hillside in Nissaki on Corfu’s north-eastern coast, a short drive or boat ride, respectively, from the affluent fishing village of Kassiopi and Corfu Town. Bright, flawless, contemporary and other such adjectives might be employed to communicate the beauty of this indoor-outdoor design.

Here, you can step out onto the lengthy sunbathing terraces and seating areas, then make your way to the wisteria-festooned dining pergola, which is set before the horizon’s sundered shades of blue, or to the pavilion-sheltered jacuzzi. You might fancy taking a quick swim in the 25-metre infinity pool. Or for those with a penchant for wild swimming, descend the serpentine steps carved into rock and enjoy a refreshing, warm sea dip.

The villa accommodates six people across three bedrooms: a master suite on the upper floor with a private balcony, bathroom and expansive dressing room; below, two en suite guest rooms alongside a spacious living area that includes a fully equipped kitchen, dining area, study area, cloakroom-cum-shower and a maid’s room. Outside, there is an elegant dining area seating up to eight.

A similar guest house can be booked together with the main house, the two accessible to each other via Indian double doors. The guest house sleeps four people in its two en suite bedrooms, meaning a grand total of 10 can enjoy the pleasure of visiting Villa Aliki in its cumulative five bedroom suites.

And with its hillside location, guests can savour the awe-inspiring 180-degree views of the ocean and the neighbouring islands to the south from the sun-soaked terrace. Just a moment in this spot and you’re sure to understand why Gerald Durrell was so enthralled by the enchanting island that is Corfu.
