Rental of the month: Dar Atlas, Ourika Valley, Morocco

Many who have travelled to Morocco will recount an extremely distinctive feel that makes it well worth visiting. Yet the country is also very diverse. Visitors may explore its bustling cities and haggle in the colourful souks; take a camel trek over the Sahara Desert’s sand dunes; hike in the Atlas Mountains; spot local fauna, including goats that nonchalantly climb trees; and stop off along the way to meet some of the people who make that world-famous commodity, argan oil.

But passing through a country so diverse can also become slightly overwhelming. Which is why holiday home Dar Atlas is such a blessing for families who would prefer to embrace it from a tranquil base.

South of Marrakech, the villa sits in eight hectares that it shares with other houses, along with 24-hour security, a well-equipped gym, and a clay tennis court set against the magnificent backdrop of the Atlas Mountains (to which trips can be arranged).

Rest assured, however, that this privately managed villa is secluded from neighbouring properties. It accommodates up to nine guests and has almost two acres of its own resplendent land, with gardens populated by palm and olive trees, as well as the verdure that climbs its walls.

Interspersed throughout these sublime gardens are shaded areas and alcoves in which to relax or dine. For the enjoyment of all the family are table-tennis facilities, a boules pitch and a court for badminton or volleyball. A swimming pool features shallow ends for children and an underwater bench on which to keep cool in the heat of the afternoon (or enjoy midday drinks, if that’s your style).

Speaking of tasty treats, one of the greatest pull factors for Morocco’s visitors is its cuisine. Given those pyramids of spices displayed at souks throughout the country, it’s no surprise the nation has gained a reputation for tagines and other uniquely flavoured dishes.

Guests at the villa will welcome the presence of its team of in-house staff. In addition to a housekeeper and concierge service, this includes a cook – specialising in Moroccan and European dishes – who will accept requests for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Your house manager, meanwhile, can provide all the information and assistance you need to make the most of any excursion to Marrakech, whose famous medina is only 30 minutes from the property by car.

The decor of the four double or twin bedrooms (with en-suite bathrooms) and one single room speaks to traditional Moroccan craft throughout. The home also has spacious living areas and a roof terrace with spectacular views.
