Photo Diary: Storm King, Hudson Valley

Jake Chessum has photographed everyone from David Bowie to Obama, bringing his fresh and spontaneous approach to every portrait. He is part of a wave of British photographers who took New York by storm in the late ’90s and he’s lived there ever since. 26 years later, he reveals his special spot for when he wants a break from the city noise.

Storm King is an outdoor sculpture park set in 500 acres of the Hudson Valley, about 60 miles from Manhattan. It’s a beautiful setting and features huge works by Calder, Henry Moore, Sol LeWitt, Richard Serra… among many others.

I have visited many times in the spring and autumn and it is just a wonderful antidote to the city. It’s huge so even when it’s busy, you feel like you’re on a quiet walk. The works here are monumental. Some fit into the landscape, others stand out. But the juxtapositions, contrasts and scale are always inspiring and feel fresh every time we visit.

I can’t help but drag a camera or two around with me. With a clear blue sky as a background the works often seem to cry out to be memorialised and cropped into in-camera. The majority of these photos were taken on film.

But I don’t only look through the camera. The art is wonderful to just behold as you walk around and under it through the variety of pathways, wild grasses and woodland paths that snake around the property. It’s a great day out… and you can rent bikes.
