Six of the best: UK vineyards

British vineyards have come of age and are offering visitors great wine and tranquil getaways

Last updated:

Once a cottage industry run by eccentrics, the UK now boasts over 1,000 vineyards. The quality of the wine has improved immeasurably, in particular the sparkling variety which now competes with champagne on the international stage. But in a country with unpredictable weather, producing wine is never easy. To help make ends meet, vineyards are drawing on their unique settings to entice visitors through the cellar door. Here are six of the best…

Whinyard Rocks, Presteigne, Powys

Whinyard Rocks for TOAST

Yes, there are vineyards in Wales! Whinyard Rocks is a particular standout because of its stunning location near the Radnor Forest in Powys. Run by escapees from London, husband and wife James and Susan Kinsey-Jones established the vineyard eight years ago next to the farmhouse that once belonged to James’s great-grandfather. It is now a tastefully converted two-bedroomed holiday cottage available for hire all year round. From here, visitors can enjoy the plentiful wonders of Mid Wales or simply stroll among the nearby vines. Once you’ve worked up a thirst, a particular recommendation is Whinyard’s Col Rondo, a delicious sparkling red.

Oastbrook Estate Vineyard, Robertsbridge, East Sussex

The Oastbrook Estate sits on the banks of the River Rother in deepest East Sussex. It’s a “boutique” vineyard that produces around 10,000 bottles of wine a year. Since they first planted vines here almost a decade ago, owners Nick and America Brewer have notched up many awards, most notably for the sparkling cuvée. As impressive as the fizz are the local attractions on Oastbrook’s doorstep. Located in historical 1066 Country, the nearby 14th-century Bodiam Castle is a good starting point for exploration. Oastbrook’s accommodation includes the delightful Vineyard Hollow that wouldn’t look out of place in a fairytale. Glamping is also on offer. oastbrook.com

Domaine Evremond, Chilham, Kent

A relative rarity, although who knows for how long, Domaine Evremond is co-owned by the French champagne house Taittinger, a sure sign of the rising stock of English winemakers. Set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty not far from Canterbury, Domaine Evremond produces just one wine, its much-lauded classic cuvée. Visitors can buy it direct from the vineyard’s brand-new Cellar Door with its magnificent views across the Kent Downs. Combine this with a visit to the picturesque village of nearby Chilham (accessible by train), and you’ve got yourself a really good day out. domaineevremond.com

Ryedale Vineyards, Westow, North Yorkshire

Vineyards in the UK don’t get much further north than this. This attractive, family-run 12-acre site is situated on south-facing slopes at the foot of the Yorkshire Wolds. Its stunning location has made Ryedale a popular draw, as have its award-winning wines. A good introduction to Ryedale’s range is the Yorkshire Trio which includes the sparkling Dalesman, Strickland Red and a white wine, Yorkshire’s Lass. Tours of the vineyard take place between Easter and the end of October. There are regular events to enjoy too, particularly Yorkshire Day in August which includes cream teas and a brass band. The farmhouse has two rooms for overnight stays. ryedalevineyards.co.uk

The Secret Vineyard, Herstmonceux, East Sussex

Once just a conifer nursery, this location has diversified into a thriving vineyard thanks to sisters Helen and Vicky Tate who were bequeathed the land in 2014. Wishing to surprise intrigued locals, they kept their plans secret – which is how the vineyard acquired its name. Not so much a secret now, the wines they produce have gone from strength to strength, not least their award-winning rosé. To really immerse yourself in the workings of a vineyard, you can sign up for a Wine and Wellness Retreat Day that offers a full range of relaxing activities, from yoga to wild swimming in the beautiful lake on site. A small but exquisite range of accommodation is available. thesecretvineyard.com

Polgoon Vineyard, Penzance, Cornwall

In 2002 two fish merchants from Cornwall decided to buy derelict land on a hilltop outside Penzance and turn it into a vineyard. Five years later, John and Kim Coulson’s rosé wine would pick up the first of many awards. Still going strong, Polgoon (a Cornish word which means “Pond on the Downs”) continues to produce a range of impressive wines including the much-garlanded sauvignon blanc. Of particular pride is the vineyard’s biodiversity – from honeybees to a family of green woodpeckers, all of which can be enjoyed with a stay at Polgoon’s three-bedroomed holiday cottage. polgoon.com
